"And He arose,
and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea,
'Peace, be still.'
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."

Picture Update

Here is the promised picture update.

New Mexico part 2 216

Brad came to visit a few weeks ago.  After working a family picnic at my school, we went hiking on Pyramid Rock by moonlight.  It was FREEZING that night so this is a picture of us all bundled up.  I was wearing three layers on bottom and four on top--in the end it proved to be too much!

New Mexico part 2 224

On Saturday we went to the flea market.  Brad had his first taste of fry bread and Navajo tea (yummy!).  The flea market was much busier this time than it was the first time we went.  And Brad and I found a lot of great gifts--including an Acoma Wedding Vase.

New Mexico part 2 229

After the flea market we went to Window Rock--you can see why it is named that.  It's just this huge hole in the middle of some red rock, but it was pretty cool.

New Mexico part 2 233

We also went to Hubble Trading Post where we were able to see a hogan.  Hogans are the traditional homes of Navajos--many still live in hogans.  We've seen a lot of them, but this is the closest we've actually come to one.

New Mexico part 2 244

This is me at Canyon de Chelly, our hike for the day.  It was gorgeous.  I think I liked this better than the Grand Canyon...mostly because we could hike all the way to the bottom.  People actually still live at the bottom of the canyon, it was really cool.  We even ran into a lady selling some jewelry.

These are the ruins at the bottom of the canyon.  Just gorgeous to see them there amidst the rock.

New Mexico part 2 266

Me and Brad at the bottom of Canyon de Chelly.  It was a great hike, and I'm so glad that I was able to share it with the love of my life. :)

One more picture of the canyon.

New Mexico part 2 304

The following Friday we had spirit day at my school.  This is my class in their Rehoboth colors--I was so proud of them all for getting into it!

New Mexico part 2 319

Last weekend we went to Albuquerque and Santa Fe.  Santa Fe was mostly shopping so I don't really have any pictures from that.  But the people whose house we stayed at in Albuquerque treated us to dinner Saturday night.  Then, they gave us each $2 to spend at the casino.  So, here I am gambling for the first time ever!  I had no idea how to play the slot machines, but I picked it up quickly.  Fortunately, we got this picture taken before we got in trouble--apparently you're not supposed to take pictures at a casino.

New Mexico part 2 320

Here we all are at the end of the night--Jena's the only one that won anything!

New Mexico part 2 340

Yesterday we went on a hike to Crevice Rock.  It was really fun.  We left around 3:30 and it was pretty nice out, but it took us a while to actually start hiking...

New Mexico part 2 339

Because first we had to get across this arroyo, which actually proved to be quite deeper than we expected.  After several different attempts and about a half hour I pretty much ran across, tossed in an old tire so one more person could get across, then we put two more tires in the water so that everyone else coudl walk across on a tire bridge.  It was a great way to start the hike--we loved it!

 New Mexico part 2 343

We literally had to scale up the rock wall.  It was a little bit scary, but very exciting.

New Mexico part 2 348

Then, there was the crevice.  You may not be able to see in this picture, but for the most part the crevice was no wider than about the width of my hips--you really had to walk sideways, or...

New Mexico part 2 350

Slide across with your feet on one wall and your back leaning on the other wall.  It was actually quite cool.  At the end the crevice opens up and you have nowhere to go but out of the crevice.  But at the bottom was this little pool.  Usually it is pretty shallow and you can jump over it, but yesterday it was about waist deep and there was no way to avoid it.  Right before I "jumped" into the pool I was literally suspended in the air because I was trapped between the two rocks (don't worry it was on purpose).  It was so cool, but I don't have any pictures of that.

New Mexico part 2 337

I do, however, have a before and after picture of us climing the rock.  The one above is on the way to the hike and the one below is coming back from the hike...notice a difference in our attitudes?

New Mexico part 2 353

New Mexico part 2 355

This is us when all was said and done.  See the mud caked on my clothes?  Remember that arroyo we had to cross at the beginnign of the hike?  We all decided that since we were already soaking wet it didn't matter if we just walked through it.  Well, I tried to run through it...and it was a bit deeper than I expected.  So, instead, I fell and I didn't land in the water, but I did land in the muddy banks at the edge of the water and ended up rolling in the mud.  It was quite the experience.

Well, that's pretty much everything that has happened since I last updated with pictures.  Hope you all enjoy these.  There probably won't be another picture post...since I'll be home in four days!!

I cannot believe that it has been so long since I last updated.  I am so sorry for all those of you that like reading about my life in NM.   I started full time teaching last week.  It has been great, but really exhausting.  I had no idea how tired teachers are!  The kids are so good, though, they really make it very easy.  The thing I love the most is watching them pick up on the things that I do differently.  For example, I always have a writing topic on the board for them to write about as soon as they come in the room in the morning.  With Mr. VanderHoven they usually just walk around or whatever.  And after lunch we have SSR (Sustained Silent Reading).  The kids used to come in and it would take about 10 minutes to get them settled down with a book and finally reading.  Now, they come right into the room, sit down and start reading.  It is seriously a beautiful thing.

Of course, I won't lie, I have had my trying moments.  Like on Friday when I caught a student cheating on her spelling test.  And she's a student that gets pulled out for almost ever subject.  She has never gotten any of her spelling words right, so I just didn't know what to do.  We worked it out eventually, but it was really a tough situation.  Or today.  Yesterday was a snow day so we had to do our Valentine's Day party today.  But I also was supposed to have kids getting pulled out of class all day long to do some reading testing.  But that meant that my students that usually get pulled out were not going to be pulled out.  Which changes the whole dynamic of the classroom (especially when they are not working on the same stuff as the rest of the class).  But we got through the day and it was a huge success.  And I got so many Valentine's Day gifts today!  A lot of chocolate and a few stuffed animals.  It was really nice.

Last weekend we drove to Albuquerque and stayed at some people's house there.  Saturday we drove an hour to Santa Fe.  It was really nice, mostly shops, but very nice.  I bought a few things, but the flea market in Gallup is so much cheaper.  Anyway, it was so nice to be at a HOUSE!  I could walk around with my shoes off and lay down on the couch and watch TV.  The family we were staying with treated us to dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning.  They even gave us each $2 to go to the casino.  It's totally a New Mexico thing to do, there are so many casinos around here.  I lost my money in the penny slots.  Actually, only one girl earned back any money--she made $10.  But it was a really fun night.

This weekend is my last weekend here.  I am really dreading it, but also really looking forward to it.  I have enjoyed my time here so much, and I would love to stay here and teach permanently, but right now there are some more important things holding me back at home (*ahem* like my fiance!).  But I do hope to be able to come back here someday--it really is a beautiful place.

I guess that's it for now, I hope to get some pictures up soon so that I can share all of my wonderful adventures with you, but until then I hope this works!

Snowy Days Part 2

Well, it has been a crazy week to say the least.  After a fun weekend at the Grand Canyon I jumped right back into school--kind of.   Monday Mr. VanderHoven decided that it was time he started leaving the classroom for longer periods of time to get me ready for my full time teaching.  So, he was gone all afternoon Monday and all morning Tuesday.  It was great!  Not that I don't like having Mr. VanderHoven in the room, but I had so much more confidence when he was gone.  I think it's because I'm a bit stricter than he is so sometimes I feel bad for making them be quiet or writing names on the board.  He is totally supportive of me and has told me numerous times that I need to find what works for me, but I still find it awkward sometimes.  Well, it went so much better because I was able to create the kind of atmosphere that I want.  And my math lesson finally worked.  Seriously, it took me four days to teach one lesson because they were just not getting it and I didn't know what to do to help them.  I finally figured it out and they did great!  It was such a good feeling to know that I could make it work.  Tuesday afternoon around lunchtime it started to snow and the kids were just CRAZY!!   But it didn't snow for too long.  However, we had a SNOW DAY on Wednesday!  I loved it.  I didn't really want to have a snow day because I was all prepared for the day, but it was a really good opportunity to catch up on everything and get ahead on other things.  So I tried my best to use the day for work.  And I succeeded.  For the most part.

But Thursday was back to school and then I headed to Albuquerque to pick up Brad for the weekend.  He spent the whole day with me in the classroom on Friday.  It was nice to have the extra hands, especially since Mr. VanderHoven was gone the whole afternoon again and my kids needed help with a math project.

So, I start my full time teaching tomorrow.  I am so excited about it!  I think it's going to be a lot of fun and I am really looking forward to the experience.  My kids are really great so I think it's the perfect first class to have.  Well, I'll post pictures from my weekend and write about it more later, but for now I wanted to give you some school information.  Hope everyone had a great weekend.  GO BEARS!!

Picture Post

A lot has happened since I last updated.  Luckily, we had a SNOW DAY today so I have plenty of time to catch up on everything that I wanted to do.  So, I will fill you in with pictures (because we all know that everyone would rather look at a few nice pictures than read a bunch of words).Amanda 182

We tried to go to the flea market one weekend, but the snow kept everyone away.  There was about three stands open so we were unable to get anything...

Amanda 186

Except fy bread.  This was my first time trying fry bread.  It's a Navajo staple.  It's actually pretty good--especially with powdered sugar.

Amanda 197

We went to the Grand Canyon this past weekend.  It was my first time, and it was amazing!

Amanda 208

Here we all are right before leaving for our hike.  That's Becca, Sara, Jena, Denise, Erik, and Me

Amanda 215

We found this tree along the way and thought it was really cool so we all got in and someone took a picture for us.

Amanda 234

This is at the rest stop that we stopped at on our way down the Grand Canyon.  We hiked about a mile and a half down.  It was somewhat challenging, but we all made it and it was a wonderful experience!

Amanda 246

This is the Grand Canyon at sunset--beautiful!

Amanda 253

We stopped at the Painted Desert on our way back.  It's not as colorful now as it is in the summertime, but it was still really neat to see.

Amanda 262

We also some ancient ruins...

Amanda 266

And petroglphs.  That was really neat.

Amanda 275

And we went to the Petrified Forest.

As you can see, it was a very busy weekend!  But I've really been enjoying my time here.  The studetns are great.  I start full time teaching this Monday.  I am so excited to begin!  I'll write more about my student teaching later, but now I have to go work on some other things.  Hope you all have a wonderful afternoon!!

Snowy Days

A lot has been going on lately, but it doesn't really seem like anything noteworthy.  We didn't do much this past weekend because of the snow.  Actually, we tried to go to the flea market on Saturday, but it was like a ghost town so we weren't able to walk around and really see anything.  Actually, it was snowing as we were there so we went back to the dorm and pretty much stayed in all day.  Sunday we also just hung around the dorm.  A girl from church invited us to her house and we watched Little Miss Sunshine and ate pizza.  It was a very relaxing night.  But we got home at almost midnight and we were all so worried because we knew we would be tired for our classes on Monday (yes, we are an early to bed crowd nowadays!).  Anyway, we walked in the dorm only to discover a note from our dorm parents saying there was a 2 hour delay at all of our schools!!   What a relief!!

Teaching has been a lot of fun.  I currently teach two subjects a day and will soon be picking up my third.  Even though I only teach two subjects a day it is actually a lot because they have at least one special every day plus a morning recess and a full hour for lunch.  So, I am getting a lot of experience in and really enjoying it.  My class is great.  They are very well behaved and very bright--they make teaching easy!  The only thing that I really want to work on is classroom management.  My cooperating teacher has a much more relaxed spirit than I do so the kids are allowed to talk a bit more that I would ordinarily let them.  I'm trying to figure out exactly how I feel about that and how I want to handle that.  It's taking some time, but I think that we're getting there and the kids are starting to pick up on my management style.

Well, that's pretty much it for now.  Please pray that it stops snowing.  We haven't actually gotten any snow since Sunday (praise the Lord!), but that seems to be how it works--no snow during the week and tons on the weekend.  But this weekend we're going to the Grand Canyon and I don't want anything to ruin that!  Hope everyone enjoys their day!!
